The group meets 4 times a year and because each member wants to be active within the group the attendance rate is usually more than 80 % of membership. There is an unwritten policy to have no more than 2 or 3 members with the same skills so that the group can offer a wide expertise within the transport industry. Also since all members have held senior positions in government, research or consultancy they have a large network of contacts in the industry with whom they can work or liaise on a client's behalf.

TAN remains 'A group of transport professionals who are mutually supporting consultants with a wide range of skills and expertise'. As an organisation it does not bid for work but would bid through a member who would then lead the project and bring in other members or outside people to undertake the needs of the project. In the last year members have had a combined fee income of more that 1 million.

The TAN expertise covers Highways, Public Transport, Intelligent Transport Systems and Telematics, Research and Transport Policy, Social Research in Transport, Sustainability, Analysis of User Attitudes for Transport Policy and Innovations, Economics and Finance (including PFI schemes), and the Transfer of Knowledge and Skills to other People
